# What is the encyclopedia?

The encyclopedia is a knowledge base integrated into your story that readers can consult at any time during their reading. It allows you to create a rich and detailed universe without overloading the main text of your steps. Curious readers can discover the world's history, character biographies, a glossary of terms, or a bestiary of creatures.

Enrich without weighing down

The encyclopedia is the ideal place for lore and worldbuilding details. Your narrative text stays fluid and immersive, while passionate readers can dive deeper at their own pace.

# Creating categories

The encyclopedia is organized into categories that structure your entries. You can create as many categories as needed to organize your content: Characters, Locations, Factions, Creatures, Items, World History, etc.

1

Access the encyclopedia

From your story dashboard, click on the "Encyclopedia" section in the sidebar menu.

2

Create a category

Click "New category" and give it a descriptive name (e.g., "Bestiary", "Factions", "Timeline").

3

Organize categories

Rearrange the order of categories by drag and drop to define the display order in the reader.

# Creating entries

Each encyclopedia entry consists of a title, an optional image, and rich text sections. You can use full formatting (bold, italic, lists, links) to create detailed and attractive entries.

# Visibility modes

Each encyclopedia entry has a visibility mode that determines how it appears to readers before being unlocked. This system creates a sense of progression and discovery.

ModeIconBehavior
HiddenHiddenThe entry does not appear at all in the encyclopedia until it is unlocked.
Silhouette? The entry appears as a silhouette with a "?" icon — the reader knows there is something to discover.
TitleOnlyTitle visibleThe entry title is visible but the content remains locked — a teaser for the reader.
AvailableCompleteThe entry is fully visible from the start of reading, with no unlock condition.
Visibility strategy

Use "Silhouette" mode for entries related to important revelations and "TitleOnly" for entries the reader knows exist but not the details. "Hidden" mode is ideal for well-kept secrets.

# Unlocking by step

For entries that are not in "Available" mode, you can define unlock steps. When the reader reaches a step linked to an encyclopedia entry, it automatically unlocks and becomes viewable. A notification can inform the reader that a new entry is available.

1

Select the entry

Open the encyclopedia entry you want to link to a step.

2

Set the visibility mode

Choose the initial visibility mode (Hidden, Silhouette, or TitleOnly).

3

Link an unlock step

Select the step that will trigger the entry's unlock. You can link multiple steps if needed.

Entry unlock configuration
Link an entry to one or more steps to control when it becomes accessible.

# Reader experience

During reading, the encyclopedia is accessible from the reading menu via a dedicated icon. The reader can browse categories, view unlocked entries, and see their discovery progress (number of unlocked entries out of the total).

# Use cases

Character biographies
Create detailed profiles for each important character. Unlock them when the reader meets the character for the first time.
World history
Document the timeline, historical events, and legends of your universe. The reader can consult them to better understand the story's context.
Glossary
Define terms specific to your universe (magic, technology, politics). Useful for complex fantasy or science fiction universes.
Bestiary
Catalog the creatures of your world with their characteristics, habitats, and weaknesses. Unlock each creature when the reader encounters it.
