# The binder: organize your story

The binder is an organizational tool that lets you group your steps into folders and subfolders, much like a traditional manuscript. As your story grows and the number of steps increases, the binder becomes essential for maintaining a structured view of your narrative.

A complementary tool to the flow

The binder and the Flow view are two different ways to visualize your story. The Flow shows the connections between steps, while the binder lets you organize them thematically or chronologically, independently of their narrative structure.

# Creating folders and subfolders

1

Access the binder

In your story's side menu, click on "Binder" to open the organization view.

2

Create a folder

Click the "New folder" button and give it a descriptive name (e.g., "Chapter 1", "Enchanted Forest", "Subplot").

3

Add subfolders

You can create subfolders within a folder to refine your organization. For example: "Chapter 1 > Introduction Scene".

4

Move steps

Drag and drop your steps from the list into the desired folders to organize them.

# Drag and drop steps

The binder supports drag and drop to easily reorganize your steps. You can move a step from one folder to another, reorder steps within the same folder, or remove them from a folder to place them back at the root.

Free organization

The binder is purely organizational. Moving a step into a folder does not change its narrative links with other steps. The story structure (connections between steps) remains managed by the parent link system.

# The label system

The binder relies on a powerful label system that lets you categorize and filter your steps in multiple ways. Labels are tags you attach to steps to quickly identify them.

Label typeFormatExamplesUsage
Folderfolder:namefolder:chapter-1, folder:epilogueAssigns the step to a folder in the binder. A step can have multiple folder labels.
Statusstatus:valuestatus:draft, status:review, status:doneIndicates the writing progress status of the step.
ColorColor namered, blue, green, yellowVisual color code to quickly identify steps by theme or priority.
Playerplayer:numberplayer:1, player:2In multiplayer mode, identifies which player this step is for.
Multiple labels

A single step can carry multiple labels of different types. For example, a step can be in "folder:chapter-2", marked as "status:done", and associated with "player:1" all at once. This offers great organizational flexibility.

# Filtering and sorting in the binder

The binder offers filtering and sorting tools to efficiently navigate your steps, even when your story contains dozens of them:

  • Filter by folder — Display only the steps from a specific folder
  • Filter by label — Filter by status, color, or player to quickly find a set of steps
  • Text search — Search within step titles and descriptions
  • Sort by date — Order steps by creation date or last modification date
  • Sort by name — Arrange steps in alphabetical order

Filters and labels let you quickly find any step in your story.

# Steps in multiple folders

A unique feature of the binder is the ability to place the same step in multiple folders. This is particularly useful when a step sits at the crossroads of multiple narrative arcs or chapters.

  • A meeting step between two characters can appear in each character's folder
  • A pivotal scene can be listed in multiple chapters if it serves as a transition
  • Shared steps in multiplayer mode can be filed in each player's folder
No duplication

Placing a step in multiple folders does not duplicate it. It is always the same step, simply referenced in multiple places. Any modification will be reflected everywhere the step appears.
