# What is a narrative arc?

A narrative arc is metadata attached to a folder in the Binder. It lets you track the progress of a chapter or section of your story through a status system: Draft, In Progress, and Completed.

Recommended organization

Create one folder per chapter or narrative branch in the Binder, then associate a narrative arc with each folder to track your progress.

# Creating an arc from the Binder

To create a narrative arc, go to your story's Binder. Below each folder without an arc, a "Create arc" button is available. Click it to associate a narrative arc with the folder.

# Arc statuses

  • Draft — The arc has just been created, steps are being planned.
  • In Progress — The steps in this arc are being written.
  • Completed — All steps in this arc are written and finalized.

Click the status badge to cycle through the three states. You can also edit the arc description by clicking the pencil icon.

# Arcs in the Nodeflow

In the Nodeflow, steps belonging to the same folder with a narrative arc are visually grouped. You can fold or unfold these groups to simplify the overview of your story.

# Progress metrics

Your story dashboard displays progress metrics based on narrative arcs: number of arcs by status, percentage of completed arcs, and overall writing progress.

Arcs and milestones

Narrative arcs and milestones are complementary: milestones structure the story skeleton, while arcs track writing progress chapter by chapter.
